The X4 is securely packed into an inner box within the (pictured) outer box.

BEFORE switching the X4 on, decide on the MODE you want.

This is where the SELECTOR switch comes into play.

The SELECTOR slide-bar (switch) is made up of 4 different positions;

….from top to bottom, they are;

  • Moonlight
  • Main LED
  • Side LED
  • Lock-Out

Once you know which LIGHTING mode you want, press the on/off button.

If your choice is the MAIN LED (white light) then presto! – you have light! To adjust the brightness, turn the dimmer knob (located on either side of the button) either up or down. The output will respond.

When moving the dimmer in either direction, the LED will FLASH when it reaches its limit of either lowest or highest output.

The MOONLIGHT setting does what it says, and that’s it. Unless you move the slider, it’ll be in moonlight each time it’s turned on.

Side LED…in a nutshell

There are different facets to the side light.

You have your choice of a constant, non-flashing (and dimmable) white light, and RGB light, which can either be a solid color, or a flashing combination of colors, OR, a solid color “beacon” flash.

Slide the bar to the SIDE LED icon, and click the switch.

Now…..here’s where it gets interesting!

Side LED…in detail

Mode memory dictates which LED you’ll see when you turn on the SIDE LIGHT.

I don’t recall which setting is activated when operating the light for the first time.

Here’s the basics.

Short press the switch for side light operation.

Once on, press and HOLD the switch. If it activates initially on the “white light” a holding press will switch to the RGB (solid light).

Adjust the beam by moving the dimming knob in a clockwise/counterclockwise motion. You can do this with both your thumb and index finger, or just one or the other, whichever feels more natural.

If it’s on the WHITE LED, CLOCKWISE will adjust it from low to high. Opposite direction; high to low.

If it’s on the RGB LED, moving the knob will CHANGE the colors

A HOLDING press while on either LED will toggle between them.

A SINGLE press will turn it off.

A DOUBLE PRESS from the solid RGB, will activate BEACON FLASH. You CANNOT change the color of the beacon while it’s flashing. If you want beacon in a particular color, you’ll need to select it first in the solid setting, then activate beacon flash. A second DOUBLE PRESS from beacon will return the beam to solid RGB. A SINGLE press will turn it off.

For double-colored FLASHING, have the light off, then do a DOUBLE PRESS. Your choice will be “red/blue” – “red/green” – “red/yellow”. To switch between the combos, a DOUBLE PRESS is required while EACH are flashing.

Tactical Turbo

I haven’t mentioned this until now, but part of the TAIL CAP is a way to activate TACTICAL TURBO!

One side of the tail is indicated as being a magnet for securing the light on a metallicized surface.

The OTHER side of the tail, is a tactical switch! With the light off, and the slider set to either the MAIN LED or the SIDE LED, press (and hold) the tail switch and you’ll get on demand TURBO!

When set to the MOONLIGHT position, the tail switch will activate moonlight, and it won’t be tactical, it’ll actually “lock on” to it, the same as pressing the main switch does.

Lock Out the LED

Move the slide bar to the bottom position. Once there, the X4 is “locked” for all lighting operations.

Test the Battery

With the X4 turned OFF, and the slide bar set to either the main or side LED, press and HOLD the on/off switch. The indicator at the bottom of the RGB LED will illuminate.

  • Steady BLUE = 90 – 100%
  • Flashing BLUE = 40 – 90%
  • Steady RED = 15 – 40%
  • Flashing RED; CHARGE IT!

Charge the Battery

USB-C charging port

To access the USB charging port, move the slider bar to the MOONLIGHT position.

The port will be visibly aligned next to the SIDE LED icon. Maybe that doesn’t make sense, but that’s where it is.

Plug in the USB cable and the indicator will (most likely) appear in RED. It’ll turn BLUE when the charge is complete.

You can (of course) REMOVE the battery from the tube and charge it in a separate charger if you wish.

Summing Up the Wuben X4

If you like lots of features on your flashlights, you’ll probably like the X4.

In the last year or two, this particular “style” of light has been very popular. More than a couple of manufacturers have released very similar types in the same style.

You might be of the opinion that the RGB lights are a bit gimmicky, but again, they’ve been showing up more lately. Yes, they can be considered as an emergency tool I suppose, but you’ll notice the X4 doesn’t have an SOS mode.

I appreciate most of what the Wuben X4 offers.

The switching is super easy, and flipping between the beam types couldn’t be simpler. It’s nice that moonlight has its own dedicated position on the sliding switch. AND, kudos to the designers for making turbo available as a tactical choice, via the tailcap!

One of the only situations where choosing a light source might become confusing, is between the RGB “white” beam, and the flashing/solid colors. Turning it on, followed by a holding press after the beam is selected is easy, but when mode memory gives you the LAST beam used, and you want the alternative one, you might not remember how to get to it.

My ONLY Complaint

My overall rating for the Wuben X4 is a B+ because I like everything it does. But IMHO the slider bar could be “tighter” when choosing the modes. When handling the light in the dark, it’s a bit too easy to unintentionally change the mode by mistake…if you’re fumbling with it that is.

In addition, When the light is ON, and you go to change the mode, from side LED to main LED (for instance) it TURNS OFF when you slide the switch! So, it needs to be turned on a second time after you select the beam you want.
